But only until it is time to get your septic tank pumped. You can’t pump what you can’t find! Never fear, here are some methods of locating that tank so you can keep your maintenance pumping on the right track!
So, the easiest method is simply asking the former homeowner. If you are looking into buying a home with a septic system, make sure to ask the seller or their realtor to let you know where the lid is. If you weren’t able to do this, you could try contacting the former owner’s realtor. They may be able to contact the previous owners to get the information for you.
If you are unable to ask the previous owner, you can try contacting the Environmental Health Department for your area. They will usually have records of the original septic permit that was filed when the tank was installed. These will usually include a map! It’s not very often that they do not have records for properties in their district.
That still didn’t work? Don’t worry! We can help find your tank for you. The old fashioned method is simply taking a rod and poking around until we find the lid. However, this could be time consuming. By extension, it may get expensive. The more modern method is bringing out a camera. So, the technician will use a camera to go through a cleanout or other pipe in your home and run it out to find the tank. There is a fee for doing this. But, scoping tried and true method!
